慰霊の日
沖縄慰霊の日（いれいのひ）は、沖縄戦で亡くなった人々を追悼するため、日本の沖縄県で毎年6月23日に定められた公休日です。日本全国で公休日として指定されいるわけではありません。沖縄戦は、太平洋戦争で日本領土で行われた唯一の地上戦でした。24万人以上が亡くなり、島内の多数の建物が破壊され、数え切れないほどの歴史文書、遺物、文化財が失われました。戦争犠牲者の約半数は地元沖縄住民で、その中には子供もいたと推定されています。
